How much is the team entry?

Each team is required to raise a minimum of £800.00 to be able to take part. This fund raising will be donated to; £50.00 to Paddlers for Life and the remaining £750.00 to a chosen charity of your choice

What should I wear?

You should wear light clothing such as shorts, lightweight trousers, t-shirt and a pair of old trainers. We recommend that you bring a complete change of clothing and a towel. Also, bring some warm layers for in between the races.

How many races does each team compete in?

Every team can expect to take part in a minimum of two qualifying races. The three fastest qualifying teams of the day will then compete in the final.

What distance is each race?

Weather dependent, the distance of the course is 200m.

What time does the event start and how long does it last?

Check arrangements with your team manager in the first instance. The team managers will register teams at 08:30 with Team Safety Briefings to follow at 09:00. The first race will be approximately 10:00. The presentation will be held as soon after the final race as possible (approx. 15:30). Please see the event agenda for the latest details.

Will I be able to see the races?

There are viewing areas along the lake which can be used by both teams and supporters. There will be barriers in front of certain areas which we ask people to stay behind at all times and not to encroach upon the boat loading area.

Where can I park?

Each team will receive 5 x free parking permits for the on-site parking.  Additional cars must pay and display a ticket. Spectators are advised to use public transport, please find more information on our event information page.

What happens if the event is postponed or cancelled?

CBA Events will take all reasonable steps to ensure that racing takes place as specified in the information pack. CBA Events, do, however, reserve the right to delay, postpone or cancel Dragon Bay in the event of adverse weather conditions, or other events outside of the organiser’s control. The determinate of what constitutes this is reserved solely by CBA Events.

What happens if it rains?

Whilst rain is not a major problem we will monitor wind direction and strength. The event will continue as long as the event manager feels that the conditions are not impeding on the health and safety of the participants. Racing would cease however, if there were thunder and lightning or excessive winds in the area.

What safety measures are taken?

The safety of a dragon boat team on the water is the prime concern of everyone associated with the event.

  • Prior to the event CBA Events carries out a risk assessment to determine the risk associated with carrying out the dragon boat regatta in Low Wood Bay.
  • At the start of the event every participant receives a full safety briefing to ensure that all participants are fully aware of what the activity involves and the associated risks.
  • Following the safety briefing each participant will be required to sign indicating receipt of a wrist band and to show that they have received the briefing.
  • By signing individual waiver forms as part of the team entry procedure, each participant voluntarily accepts all risks involved and will not hold CBA Events liable for any claims arising from any accident resulting in any loss or damage including bodily injury or death.
  • CBA Events insist that every participant must wear a buoyancy aid supplied by them whilst they are on the water.
  • Low Wood Watersports Centre and Paddlers for Life own and maintain its own equipment meaning it can vouch for its fitness and suitability at all times.
  • Low Wood Watersports Centre and Paddlers for Life helms have a certificate of competency which complies with International Breast Cancer Paddlers Commission (IBCPC) and International Dragon Boat Federation (IDBF) requirements.
  • Low Wood Watersports Centre and CBA Events carry full public and third party liability insurance.
  • CBA Events and Low Wood Watersports Centre prohibits any participant from consuming alcohol until racing has finished.

How often does a dragon boat capsize?

The size and design of dragon boats gives them an innate stability and therefore capsize is a rare occurrence, although it is always possible. Our Dragon Bay partners, Low Wood Watersports Centre, are proud of their impeccable safety record which is as a result of the skills and diligence of their staff. Before the event commences, all participants will be briefed on the procedure in the event of a capsize and the rescue protocol. Capsize is generally as a result of wind, other watercrafts or the behaviour of the crew.

Will training be provided?

CBA Events will be offering one evening training session per team. We will be in contact to advise the dates on which we will be running the sessions.

Do I have to bring my own food and drink?

There will be stalls on site catering for every taste from carnivores to vegetarians (and those who can’t function without their caffeine fix!)

    What distance is each race over??

    How do I get there by public transport? Are there buses that stop at/near the Centre (on a Sunday morning)?

      Hello Carla, thanks for your message. The 555 bus Lancaster/Keswick runs past a bus stop right outside the Low Wood Bay. Then it’s a very short walk to the Water Sports Centre. Please see our Event Information page for more details. We recommend also using Stagecoach Journey Planner and Traveline for help with bus timetables.
